Cobie Smulders was born on April 3, 1982, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her real name is Jacoba Francisca Maria Cobie Smulders: she was named after her great-aunt Jacoba for which she was given the nickname Cobie. She was born to a Dutch father and an English mother but spent most of her life in Vancouver.
Surprisingly, Cobie Smulders never gave much notice to acting when she was young as she had her sights set on becoming a marine biologist or doctor. However, as soon as high school came, she started to explore the field of acting when she appeared in several school productions. Aside from acting in theater, she was also active in sports such as tennis, swimming and soccer.
During her teenage years, Cobie caught the eye of a modeling agency that paved the way for her to travel to places such as Italy, France, Greece, Germany and Japan. Despite the rise in her modeling career, Cobie still managed to attend school. In fact, in year 2000, she graduated high school with honors.
Fresh out of high school, Cobie continued to pursue her modeling career on an international level until an opportunity to audition for film and television was presented. It was her natural ability that impressed many casting directors that eventually landed her guests spots on different TV series such as “Special Unit 2” and “Jeremiah”. Aside from TV, Cobie also landed an appearance in the short film “Candy from Strangers”.
However, it was later on where Cobie got recognition in landing the role of Juliet in “Veritas: The Quest” in 2003. This was Smulders’s first permanent series role but the ABC series was short-lived. Little did she know that the ending of the TV series paved the way to a bigger and better one.
In 2005, Cobie landed the role of Robin Scherbatsky on the hit television series “How I Met Your Mother”. The show follows Ted along with his friends as he recounts to his son and daughter the events that led to his meeting of their mother. Smulders’s character, Robin, is an independent and strong-willed woman that left her life in Canada to pursue a news casting career in New York.
This CBS television series then became an instant hit as it received consistently strong ratings from the start of its run. It even won several awards including an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2009. In addition, the series proved to be a hit by being consistently nominated in several different award-giving bodies such as People’s Choice Awards and the Teen Choice Awards.
Much like her character in the hit TV series, Cobie is a Vancouver Canucks devotee. In December 2010, Smulders posed for the popular men’s magazine Maxim. Her cover apparently caught the eye of many men as she was voted #9 on the 2011 Maxim list of Hot 100 Women.
Smulders lives in Los Angeles, California with boyfriend Taran Killiam. In 2008, the couple announced that they were expecting their first child. Shaely Cado Killiam was then born in May of 2009 as the couple announced their engagement in the same year.
In 2012, Smulders is back to doing films as she was cast to play Maria Hill on the upcoming film, The Avengers. However with the success of “How I Met your Mother”, it seems that this Canadian actress has no plans in stopping her TV career. With the going success rate of her hit TV series, Cobie Smulders is surely an actress to watch out for.
