Besides the gorgeous Salma Hayek, another Latina bombshell is paving her way to Hollywood stardom – no less than Sofia Vergara. While most people think she’s new, she isn’t exactly, being in the show business as model, host and actress since the age of 17. However, by gaining mainstream recognition in the US with her stellar role as Gloria Pritchett in the comedy hot Modern Family, Vergara is now one of the deftest comedic actresses on TV.
Born on July 10, 1979 in Barranquilla, Colombia, Sofia Margarita Vergara in real life was raised as a devout Catholic. Her father, Julio Enrique, produced cattle for the meat industry while her mother, Margarita, is a homemaker. She grew up together with her father and used to ride horses and swim in river.
Coming from a moderately affluent family in Colombia, she studied in a private bilingual school (Spanish/English), which taught her to speak Spanish and English (with Midwestern accent) fluently. Sofia Vergara was married at the age of 18 and after one year, she gave birth to her son, Manolo. Vergara’s marriage did not last very long.
After her unsuccessful marriage, she went to Colombia University to study pre-dentistry. While studying dentistry and with just a year left before she graduate, Vergara was discovered by a photographer whilst at a Colombian beach. With her 5’7” tall height, sexy and fit body, and naturally blonde hair, she got different runway and catalog modeling work. Soon, it led to more modeling opportunities, both in print and in television.
Sofia Vergara transferred to Bogota, Colombia to pursue show business. Perhaps, her big break was when she got a hosting role for the travel show Fuera de Serie or Out of the Ordinary in 1995. This gave her huge exposure in the US after its airing on Univision.
Besides her TV exposure, Vergara’s exotic appeal made her a popular bikini model and soon, Hollywood took notice of her. In 2002, she landed a role in the comedy Big Trouble, her big-screen debut, opposite Renee Russo, Tim Allen and Zooey Deschanel. While she was noted for her deft comedic talent, the role was limited, often being stereotyped as the token buxom babe.
Vergara’s typecast continues with her roles in various television shows and films. After Bigtime, several shows followed including Chasing Papi, The 24th Day, Soul Plane, Lords of Dogtown, My Wife and Kids, Baywatch and more. While she already proved that she’s capable of humor, she had yet to try a more dramatic role.
As such, she got a chance to star as Tyrese Gibson’s girlfriend in the drama Four Brothers. Although she had given her best shot, TV insiders and critics recognized that she was cut out for bringing laughter. Hence, she continued starring in more comedy dramas including Tyler Perry Meets the Brow and Madea Goes to Jail.
Sofia Vergara finally got her biggest spotlight when she got the role of Gloria Pritchett in the ABC sitcom Modern Family. As Gloria, she plays the mother role of the funniest family in TV. With audiences and critics recognizing Vergara for her unsullied comedic timing and witty antics, she has been the breakout star.
