Anna Hathaway is a mystery that is difficult to solve. One minute she is corky and dorky, busting a gangsta rap for Conan O’Brien, the next minute she is regal and respectful as an Academy Award winner; she can be prim and proper, but also has no qualms taking off her clothes while cuddling with Jake Gyllenhaal; she can pull off a comedic role for teens and highly intense characters for the critics. But either way, Anne Hathaway is definitely one of the best and most dependable A-list movie stars of this generation.
The acid test for actors is the ability to take on a wide range of characters and characterizations across different genres. Think Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep, and the opposite of Sylvester Stallone and Shannon Tweed. Anne Hathaway belongs to the earlier list of thespians and she has a barrage of films to prove it.
She first starred in the family films “The Princess Diaries”, “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” and “Ella Enchanted”. She took on cutesy roles that perfectly fit her deer-in-the-headlight eyes and Julia Roberts-ish smile. Also, perhaps not known to many is that her quirky voice won an Emmy for a voice-over performance in The Simpsons.
Without warning, she took on heavy dramatic roles in 2005 for the films “Brokeback Mountain” and “Havoc”, in which she showed a great amount of skin that surprised moviegoers. There was nudity in a number of scenes. In 2008, she starred in “Rachel Getting Married” and her performance earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress, losing only to Kate Winslet for “The Reader”.
One of her most memorable and life changing movies, of course is “The Devil Wears Prada”, opposite the master thespian, Meryl Streep. Other big names in the film were Stanley Tucci and Emily Blunt, and Hathaway very skillfully handled her own, considering that she was still relatively a newcomer at that time. Both Streep and Blunt received accolades and nominations, while Hathaway received a Teen Choice Award for “Choice Chemistry” with Meryl Streep.
Other memorable romantic comedies to her credit are “Valentine’s Day” with a full cast of A-listers such as Bradley Cooper, Julia Roberts, Patrick Dempsey, Ashton Kutcher and Jenifer Garner; “Love and Other Drugs”, a steamy and provocative movie with the great Jake Gyllenhaal; and “One Day” with Jim Sturgess. And once again she lent her voice for the animated film “Rio”. Only bona fide actors can evoke emotions using only their voice.
After successfully making a name for herself in comedy, romantic comedy, drama and family movies, Hathaway had recently set her eyes on action films. She joins the cast of Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises” as Catwoman. And to prove her versatility once again, she also landed the role of Fantine in the upcoming movie adaptation of “Les Miserables”.
There are just so many things about this young actress. She was named breakthrough star in 2001 and voted into People Magazine’s World’s 50 Most Beautiful People in 2006. This is a title that is fit only for celebrities like Michelle Pfeifer, Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Some of her recent movies are “Get Smart”, “Passengers”, “Bride Wars” and “Alice in Wonderland”. Her charities include The Creative Coalition, The Step Up Women’s Network, The Lollipop Theatre Network, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and The Human Rights Campaign. She speaks openly about her fight against oppression when she was a teenager.
Anne Hathaway is a smoker in real life. She said smoking calms her down. She recently announced her engagement to Adam Shulman.
