Emma Watson has attained international fame as Hermione Granger in the extremely popular Harry Potter franchise. The British beauty has not worked on any movie projects outside Harry Potter but that has not affected her bank account. Listed at No.6 in the Forbes list of ‘Most Valuable Young Stars’, she earned $15 million annually for her lead role in Harry Potter and has a net worth of $50 million.
Born on April 15, 1990 in Paris, France, Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson is the daughter of Chris Watson and Jacqueline Luesby, both British lawyers. Her parents divorced when she was five and together with her mother and brother Alex, they moved back to Oxfordshire in England. While growing up, Watson learned to dance, sing and act at the Stagecoach Theater Arts at Oxford.
Emma Watson’s natural affinity for acting first showed at the age of seven when she won poetry content for reciting ‘The Sea’. She performed in different plays at school from six to nine. Having no professional acting experience, her theater teacher suggested her to audition for an upcoming movie based on the first novel of Harry Potter series.
After eight auditions, the nine-year old Watson landed the role that would make her a global star. Harry Potter author J.K Rowling, who was hands on with the film process to ensure it stayed true to the book, noticed Watson as the perfect candidate to portray Hermione from the first screen test. Watson impressed the casting agents and film producers and won the role of Hermione Granger, Harry Potter’s witty, bossy best friend, along with Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter and Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley.
The three British child actors instantly become known around the world as the young wizards. The Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone hit the big screen in November 2011 and grossed more than $974 million worldwide. Watson’s performance received praises and her standing as a flourishing young star was made.
Emma Watson spent half of her life filming the Potter series. She reprised her role as the bright bookworm Hermione from the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow: Part 1 and 2 (2010 and 2011 respectively). With the eight-part series of Harry Potter, people watched their character and their physical looks grow and change on camera.
Although Watson has been very well recognized as Hermione Granger, as an adolescent, she wanted to be identified as more. In 2007, she starred in a film based on the novel Ballet Shoes, where she earned decent, if not excellent, reviews. The following year, she ventured out into animated film, lending her voice as Princess Pea in The Tale of Despereaux.
Despite spending their adolescence on filming, the trio, Watson, Grint and Radcliffe kept up with their education through private tutorial. Watson took the high school equivalency exams and got a high mark in each subject. She gave up a year from school to focus on the final two Potter films.
Amid her glorious years, Emma Watson appeared on the cover of Teen Vogue for three times. She also starred in the campaigns of 2009 Burberry Fall/Winter and 2010 Spring/Summer, shot by no less than Mario Testino. Being a growing teenager, she gradually became famous as a fashionista for her chic yet edgy fashion style.
When the last Harry Potter film hit the theaters on July 2011, it marked the end of Emma Watson’s image as Hermione. She announced her plans to return to Brown University to complete her degree after she studied at Oxford. After Harry Potter, she starred on the films My Week with Marilyn and The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
