Rurouni Kenshin is a Japanese movie based on the popular manga series Samurai X where Himura Kenshin known as the Hitokiri Battosai who slay a lot of people and wanted to change his life by becoming a wanderer, helping people out for the murders he once committed as an assassin and his life changes when he meet Kaoru Kamiya who didn’t acknowledge him as a murderer.

The movie is set during the 1868 Bakumatsu War were Kenshin Himura (Takeru Satoh) known as the Hitokiri Battosai fought for the restoration of the new era after winning form the battlefield Kenshin abandon his katana and take a vow that he will not kill anymore, Jin-e Udo (Koji Kikkawa) survive the war and claim the old katana of Battosai. Ten years later Kenshin once called Hitokiri Battosai became a wanderer and now calling himself Rurouni Kenshin or Himura Kenshin. Meanwhile, Saito Hajime (Yosuke Eguchi) investigating the murder of an undercover cop which had a letter with the Battosai name on it but Saito is not convinced that it is the doing of the Battosai and suspect Kanryu Takeda (Teruyuki Kagawa) a wealthy businessman who had a huge mansion around Tokyo. While Kenshin walking in the streets he saw a picture of Battosai being wanted by the police and where he meets Kaoru Kamiya (Emi Takei) the owner of a Kendo School left by her father. She attacks Kenshin believing that he is the one causing all this trouble and letting her kendo school with no students left which ruin the teaching of Kamiya Kasshin Ryu but later proven wrong when Kenshin reveal that his carrying a reversed blade katana and Kaoru apologizes. Meanwhile Saito visited Kanryu and interrogate him regarding the incident of the murdered cop and Kanryu denied it and Saito wanted to search the Shinbashi warehouse own by Kanryu whether its business is legal or not but needed formal letter to be able to do so. Kanryu business is making opium and trading it to a firearm; elsewhere a woman named Megumi Takumi (Yu Aoi) a member of venerable family doctors span by generations but after the Aizu War the members of the family were all killed left her the only survivor. She manages to escape from Kanryu after being forced to make opium and turn to police for the witness of the deaths of other opium makers. However, Jin-e under the service of Kanryu track her down at the police station and slaying everyone on the path and luckily she escape from that chaos. Kaoru crosses paths with Jin-e after seeing one of the police officer been killed and Kaoru was injured from Jin-e attack until she was save by Kenshin and Jin-e saw the scar on Kenshin faces and realizes that he is the Battosai before a swarm of policeman appear and they had a chance to flee and Kaoru brings Kenshin to her dojo but later leaves.

Next day a group of men under the service of Kanryu wanted to take over the dojo and breaks all the things before the men attack Kaoru Kenshin came and defeated all the men of Kanryu and later the policeman came and seizes all the men including Kenshin due to katana his holding and imprison him. Soon Saito recognizes him as the Battosai and release him that time Sanosuke Sagara (Munetaka Aoki) also was there. Saito brings Kenshin to his superior Yamagata Aritomo (Eji Okuda) and Yamagata offer Kenshin to lend him his strength in exchange a key position in the army due to widespread of opium in the country but Kenshin refuses and Saito had no other choice but to duel him to see whether he can protect people around him without killing in the middle of duel while Kenshin losing Yamagata stop it and let Kenshin go. At the gate of the police station Kaoru was waiting for Kenshin and he recognize him as Kenshin not Battosai and takes him back to the dojo. Meanwhile, Megumi is still escaping from the men of Kanryu and bumps into Yahiko Myojin (Taketo Tanaka) the only students of Kaoru in the dojo. Yahiko help her out and bring her to the dojo, after returning to dojo both Kenshin and Megumi introduces to everyone. Kaoru treated everyone dinner on a restaurant but Kanryu spoiled their dinner by hiring Kenshin to become his men and again Kenshin refuses that makes Kanryu angry and offer money to anyone who defeat Kenshin and Sanosuke accept the offer. Sanasuke had a huge weapon called the Zanbato an antique form Onin wars because of the speed of Kenshin Sanosuke had no match for him and later the challenge end due to Sanosuke had no intention of Kanryu money but just to duel with Kenshin.

Again Jin-e killing a bunch of cops including the men of Kanryu who got arrested at the dojo, Kenshin and friends witness the horror also Saito is at crime scene and angrily tell Kenshin if the reversed blade katana can protect people if he could just killed the men way back then so the cops would not get mixed up. Kenshin saw the woman mourning the death of her lover and flashes back fourteen years ago when he was a Battosai doing the exact same kind of crime which caused him a cross-shaped scar on his face. That night one of the Kanryu men who has a masked on it warns Megumi to retuned to Kanryu side or else unexpected incident will happen, Later people around the city got ill form a rat posion and rushes to the dojo for treatment and Megumi suspect Kanryu for the wrong doing after treating all the patient, Megumi returned to Kanryu and she attempt to kill him but failed instead she held as a hostage. Kenshin and Sanosuke go to Kanryu mansion to rescue Megumi but they need to battle thousands of Kanryu men and little by little they bring them down, going inside the mansion there is two main battle occur one is Sanosuke battle against a brawler same as him, the other one is Kenshin battle with the masked guy who earlier warns Megumi they both won the fights. After arriving at the deeper end of the mansion Kanryu armed himself a gatling gun which made them difficult to attack, Saito arrives for aid and helping them to arrest Kanryu and his men. They rescued Megumi but discover that Kaoru been kidnapped by Jin-e. Kenshin pursued Jin-e and enabled to track him down but due to his will not to kill his skill weakened and Jin-e were not satisfied on Kenshin and uses a special skill called the Shin No Ippou to paralyzes the lungs of Kaoru which make Kenshin angry, the only way to stop the justu is to killed the person affected or killed the user of that jutsu which lead him no choice but to kill Jin-e.  In the depths of the duel little by little Kenshin move was faster until he uses his two Hiten Misturugi Ryu the Ryu Tsui Sen and Sou Ryu Sen before Kenshin attempt to kill Jin-e Kaoru overcome the jutsu preventing Kenshin from breaking his vow and Jin-e kill himself and told Kenshin that “it is in human nature to kill, murder is murder after all”. Kenshin takes unconscious Kaoru back to the dojo and where he meets Saito and still convincing Kenshin that without killing cannot bring justice and security but Kenshin didn’t change and still stick to his will on not killing. Kaoru back at the dojo and when he wakes up he realizes that Kenshin is not around and immediately search for him and found out that Kenshin was out picking some vegetables and tell Kenshin that the dojo is now his home.
