Sophie Charlene Akland Monk, better known as just Sophia Monk, was born in London but grew up in Queensland, Australia. Sophie was a member of an Australian female group called Bardot. However, Sophie claimed fame not only because of her singing talent but because of her acting skills as well.
Sophie went to Macgregor State High School where she was the School Captain during her senior year. She was also enlisted in the Center of Artistic Development Program during her stay at Macgregor. After graduation, Sophie spent some time attending A.B Paterson College.
However, Sophie’s interest was always music, which is why she decided to pursue a professional career in music in 1999. She then responded to an ad that requested for an all-girls local group with dance experience. After numerous singing and dancing workshops, Monk was officially selected as a member of the group with the name Bardot.
Bardot then became a nationwide success with its debut single “Poison” along with its self-titled album. Further songs followed their success, such as “These Days” and “I Should’ve Never Let You Go”. In 2000, Bardot was nominated for three categories at the ARIA awards where they were also asked to perform during the awards night.
In 2001, Bardot released their first single from their follow-up album entitled “ASAP”. Several tracks that proved to be hits followed with “I Need Somebody”, “Play It Like That” and “Love Will Find A Way”. After a string of hits, Sophie and her group embarked on its second national tour and disbanded awhile after during the height of their music career.
However, Sophie was determined to broaden her horizon by pursing an acting career after a very successful music profession. Her first take on acting was when she took on a small role as Marilyn Monroe for the 2004 movie “The Mystery of Natalie Wood”. She also starred in one of Blink 182’s music videos in the same year.
Sophie continued to extend her film credits with “Date Movie” and “Click”. In 2006, her acting skills were put to the test went she was cast as the villain in “Spring Breakdown”. By 2008, Monk was asked to portray Alexa in “The Hills Run Red”, which was shot in Sofia, Bulgaria.
By 2007, Sophie was ready to hit American TV with her debut in an episode of “Entourage”. Sophie was signed on for the comedy movie “Spring Break ‘83” alongside Jamie Kennedy, John Goodman and Raviv Ullman. She also made appearances in films such as “Sex and Death 101”, “Murder World”, “Hard Breakers”, and “The Legend of Awesomest Maximums”.
Aside from her appearances is several movies and TV shows, Sophie became well known as the target of the tabloids when she began dating Benji Madden. Two years after, though, media reports stated that the couple had already split up, with Monk returning to Australia. By February of 2008, the reports were confirmed saying that the decision was mutual and that the former lovers remain friends.
In February 2010, Sophie Monk was in a car accident in Los Angeles where she ended up in a wheelchair. The year that followed proved to be quite unstable for her with the ups and downs of her personal life as she announced that she was engaged to Jimmy Esebag of America’s Licensing Holding Group in January of 2011. However, two months later, Sophie’s announced that she had already separated from her fiancé and was happily single.
